OXFORD, Miss. - Beginning this August with preseason camp, the Ole Miss soccer team will have a new playing surface under its feet.

The soccer field at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex is undergoing renovations and is getting new grass which will be ready for the 2011 season.

"This is great for our program to be able to get new sod on the field before the fall," Mott said. "It's exciting and we are looking forward to playing on it come August."

The grass on the soccer field, which was an old intramural field, is the original grass and is over 30 years old. In 1996, the first year Ole Miss had a soccer team, the team did not play on the field as the athletics department was completing general cosmetic improvements on the field. The department also started maintaining the field in 1996 and has been doing so ever since. The team began playing on the field in 1997.

This year, the department had the field analyzed and based on the age of the field and the required maintenance, the recommendation was made to replace the grass.

The work on the field began in April and will be done in time for the team to begin preseason camp in August. The grass that is being taken off the field will be used to re-sod other practice fields on campus.
