OXFORD, Miss. - Newcomer Rafaelle Souza scored two goals en route to Ole Miss' 2-0 win over Southern Miss Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
"It was a good performance for the first time out. I felt we moved about and were able to create some chances," second-year head coach Matt Mott said. "Overall, I felt it was a good performance and we gave ourselves a lot of chances. I think Southern Miss gave us a really good game tonight and we were happy to get that second goal."
In the 17th minute Souza put Ole Miss up 1-0 when she bent in a left-footed corner kick for her first goal of the year.
Souza scored another spectacular goal in the 83rd minute as she blasted a direct free kick from 45 yards out past the Eagles defenders and keeper.
Ole Miss finished the game with 14 shots to Southern Miss' seven. Souza led the Rebels with six shots.
Emily Reid tested the keeper early with a one-time blast in the fourth minute that had the keeper beat but went wide.
Reid again found herself with a good chance in the 12th minute off a pass from Erin Emerson. Reid's attempt forced Southern Miss keeper Hannah Vanderboegh to come off her line and deflect the shot.
In the 58th minute Reid connected with Souza to provide a good chance for the Rebels. Reid beat two defenders down the left side and slotted the ball to Souza who took a few touched and hit a shot that Vanderboegh had to knock out of the face of the goal.
Three newcomers found their way into the starting lineup in Reid, Souza and Emily Sinovich. In addition, freshman goalkeeper Kelly McCormick played the second 45 in goal.
Ole Miss will travel to Texas Tech Friday at 7 p.m. followed by a home game against Jackson State Sunday, August 28th at 7 p.m.
