BARRINGTON, R.I. - Incoming freshman golfer Taelor Rubin will tee it up with some of the best amateurs and collegiate golfers this week in the prestigious 111th U.S. Amateur Championship at the Rhode Island Country Club.
Rubin qualified through a qualifier in her home state of North Carolina at Sapona Country Club. She carded a 72 and secured the final spot on the first playoff hole. This marks the second year in a row for Rubin to compete in the U.S. Am.
"It's an honor to qualify for the U.S. Amateur and play for our National Championship," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "Rhode Island Country Club is a great venue. Taelor is familiar with this environment having played in the U.S. Am last year and in two U.S. Junior Championships. Janell (Howland - assistant coach) and I look forward to following her this week."
This will mark the fourth time the RICC has hosted the USGA's premier event for women's amateurs on the par-71 Donald Ross course that will play to 6,441 yards.
The 156-players will play two stroke play rounds, one Monday and one Tuesday, to determine the 64 players that will advance to match play beginning on Wednesday. The final two will play a 36-hole match on Sunday for the championship.
The Golf Channel will have two hours of coverage beginning with match play on Wednesday and continuing through Sunday at 2-4 p.m. CDT.
Rubin will tee off the first round of stroke play Monday at 6:33 a.m. CDT from No. 1 tee paired with players from Canada and Chinese Taipei.
