Ole Miss Finishes Fifth at Golfweek Conference Challenge

VAIL, Colo. - In a hotly-contested final round of action at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, the Ole Miss women's golf team struggled with the tough course at the Red Sky Golf Club and finished in a tie for fifth place.

With nine strokes separating first and ninth place at the conclusion of the second round, it was Oklahoma that emerged from the crowd, shooting a 3-over to take the tournament title with an 899 total score.

Ole Miss shot a 13-over for the final round, finishing nine strokes behind the Sooners-a tie for fifth in a six-team logjam at the top of the standings.

The front nine had given the Rebels, and most teams, fits in the first two rounds; but Wednesday, it was the back nine that proved to be the Rebels' undoing, as Ole Miss tallied 18 bogeys and three double-bogeys on that stretch.

"This was a great experience for the team, and we are proud of them and how they competed," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "Playing in the last group in the final round and knowing that we can win is the opportunity we strive for every tournament. This time we didn't achieve the results we wanted, but it helps us to gain more experience so that we are in this position in our next tournament. We can use this tournament to succeed. That is what Coach Howland and I like about this team; they are always looking at the positives and learning from the areas that will make them better."

Senior Natalie Gleadall earned the fourth top-five finish of her career, taking second place. Gleadall, who led the tournament at the conclusion of Monday and Tuesday's action, shot a five-over 77 in the final round to finish three strokes behind Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma.

Haley Millsap, Ericka Schneider, and Haley Sanders each carded a three-over 75 to lead the Rebels in Wednesday's round. That score, coupled with a strong round in tough conditions Tuesday, gave Millsap her sixth career top-20 finish at 10-over for the tournament.

Schneider missed out on a top-20 finish by just two strokes.

The Rebels are off until the middle of October, when they compete in the SEC/Pac-10 Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn.
