LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Ole Miss rifle team shot an aggregate team score of 4622 Saturday in its NCAA Qualifier match held at the University of Kentucky's Barker Hall.
"We had a great start," Rebel head coach Valerie Boothe said. I thought prone was solid. We were holding our own against Kentucky. Standing and kneeling was where we had trouble. We had to regroup and shoot good air rifle."
Like they've done most of the latter part of the season, the Rebels struggled in smallbore but responded strongly in air.
Ole Miss fired a 2349 in air, led by senior Keely Stankey's 592. Sophomore Abbey Stanec shot a career-high 590 in air, while junior Kim Coffey produced a 586.
"The team really put their effort into air," Boothe said. "I'm very proud of them for coming through with a good team air score."
In smallbore, sophomore Melissa Quartarone shot a 576 to lead Ole Miss. As a team, the Rebels shot 2273 in smallbore.
The Rebels score from Saturday equated for 50 percent of their season average. The other 50 percent already had been completed, and came from Ole Miss' top three regular season scores, each having to come from a different site.
The Rebels are looking for their second ever NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. Ole Miss' lone appearance came in 2006.
Ole Miss entered Saturday's Qualifier match as the No. 8 team in latest CRCA poll. After the weekend ends, the top eight teams in the nation with the highest averages advance to the March 8-10 NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
The Rebels will find out Tuesday or Wednesday of this week whether or not they made the NCAA Championships, during an NCAA Selection call.
