OXFORD, Miss. - Behind a season-high tying 584 smallbore score produced by senior Keely Stankey, the Ole Miss rifle team earned a fifth place finish in the smallbore segment of the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships Saturday at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center.
"I'm very, very happy with the girls," Rebel head coach Valerie Boothe said. "There's always some stuff we could have done that would have boosted our score even more, but I'm extremely happy going into tomorrow knowing that we shot well in smallbore."
The Rebels finished with a team aggregate score of 2302, which tied their second highest smallbore score of the entire 2011-12 season.
Besides Stankey's brilliant performance, sophomore Melissa Quartarone shot a 575 and freshman Evalyn Holman fired a smallbore personal-best tying score of 574.
"Evalyn's 574 was clutch for us," Boothe said.
Stankey also finished fourth among competitors in the individual smallbore finals.
"To see (Keely) head into the finals being fourth, and finish the finals at fourth, I was really pleased with her performance," Boothe said.
The 2012 GARC Championships will conclude tomorrow. The Championships are scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. Sunday with individual air rifle competition starting things off.
