OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 17 ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team heads to Fayetteville and Baton Rouge this weekend to begin the stretch run of the Southeastern Conference regular season with matches against Arkansas and LSU.
Ole Miss moved up to No. 17 in the latest ITA National Team Rankings. They defeated South Carolina 5-2 before dropping a match at No. 2 Florida last weekend and stand at 11-7 overall, 3-3 in the SEC.
"It's a tough trip for us. We go directly to Fayetteville, but then on the way to Baton Rouge, we have to go through Atlanta. There's just no easy to do this trip," head coach Mark Beyers said. "We're playing two good teams, which makes it even tougher. Not an easy weekend. We played well last weekend in the win over South Carolina and even in the loss to Florida. We have a lot of confidence from that standpoint."
The Rebels continue to be led by senior Kristi Boxx, who is ranked No. 12 in the latest addition of the ITA Singles Rankings. She owns a 21-8 overall record, 11-5 at No. 1 singles and is 5-1 in the SEC. Fellow senior Abby Guthrie won both her matches last weekend to improve to 9-2 at No. 5 singles, 5-1 in the SEC. Together the duo is ranked No. 6 in doubles and owns a 14-2 record at No. 1, 5-1 in the SEC.
"Abby had a great win against Florida. She beat a player who was undefeated for the year and for her to come up with a win like that is big," Beyers said. "Everyone is playing pretty well. At different times throughout the season, different people have stepped up."
Arkansas comes into Friday's match at 11-8 overall, 2-4 in conference play. They are coming off a 4-3 upset of then No. 12 Tennessee. Tennessee was without two players in singles which gave Arkansas a 2-1 lead before singles play began.
LSU enters the weekend at 10-7 overall and 3-3 in the SEC. They are coming off a split weekend as well, defeating Tennessee and losing to Georgia. The Tigers are led by senior Whitney Wolf at No. 1 singles.
