OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss athletics department will release a documentary this fall entitled "The Missing Piece" which focuses on Carey Casey's (CEO for the National Center for Fathering) visit to Ole Miss this past spring. Casey, author of "Championship Fathering: How to Win at Being a Dad," spoke to student-athletes, coaches and support staff on fatherhood and the effects of parent abandonment.
"We brought Carey in to speak to our athletic department to give us a better understanding of the significance of the parenthood abandonment issue that affects so many people in our nation," said assistant athletics director for internal operations Jamil Northcutt. "Most importantly, our desire is to help our student athletes, coaches, and staff, deal with these challenges by providing support and solutions."
Casey spoke to members of the track & field, football, and men's and women's basketball teams, as well as all head and assistant coaches, support staff, and academic support staff.
His book was used to create the blockbuster film "Courageous." Casey serves on the White House Task Force for Fatherhood and Healthy Families and has served as team chaplain for the late Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry (Dallas Cowboys), the Kansas City Chiefs, and the 1988 Olympic Team.
In high school, Casey played in the 1971 Virginia State Championship football game -- the game later dramatized in the award-winning movie, "Remember the Titans."
