VAIL, Colo. - Senior Haley Sanders fired a 1-over 73 today to lead Ole Miss on the first day of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Course in Vail, Colo.
As a team, the Rebels are in sixth place after one day of competition with 12-over 300. Pepperdine and Oklahoma are tied for the team lead after Monday with a 2-under 286.
"Proud of the team we got off to a slow start on our first nine which happened to be the back nine," head coach Michele Drinkard said. "The green speeds are quite speedy here and we had too many three putts. We actually struck the ball very well but on the back side we recovered and ended up shooting a 300 today."
Sanders, who is in a tie for 17th, recorded four birdies on the day but she also recorded five bogeys.
"I started off with a three putt which wasn't what I wanted to do but I got it rolling after that and hit a lot of greens," Sanders said.
Ericka Schneider and Alison Hovatter each carded a 3-over 73 on Monday. The 73 ties Hovatter's best round as she also recorded a 73 two weeks ago in her first career start at the Cougar Classic.
Kathryn Fowler, seeing her first competition of the season, carded a 5-over 77. She recorded an eagle on a par 4 on hole three.
"Number three is only about 270 yards and today the pin was on the front," Fowler said. "I took my driver and was just to the right of the green after my tee shot. I took my 56 degree wedge and hit a pitch that bounced into the fringe and then the ball just trickled into the hole. It was really neat to be able to see the ball go in like that. I think this was the first eagle I have had in a college tournament."
Freshman Abby Newton ended the day with an 11-over 83.
