Hovatter Leads Rebels at Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Alison Hovatter shot an opening round 3-under par 69 to lead the Ole Miss women's golf team at the UNC Tar Heel Invitational on Friday (Oct. 11). Hovatter's 69 is a new 18-hole low score, besting her previous low by four strokes.
Hovatter has been the epitome of consistent throughout the fall season and today's round was no exception. The Alabama native nailed five birdies on the afternoon en route to her best collegiate round of golf. Hovatter is sitting in third place, just two strokes off of individual leader Antonia Scherer from Vanderbilt, who fired a 5-under par 67 to open tournament action.
"I am proud of Alison for recording her new lowest round to date," said head coach Michele Drinkard." I'm also proud of Abby for staying patient and keeping her putts rolling at a good speed."
As a team, the Rebels turned in one of their best rounds of the fall. Ole Miss is sitting in a tie for fourth place with Oklahoma with a team score of 4-over par 292. In total, the Rebels recorded 10 pars on the day and posted their lowest round this fall.
"This was the first time this fall that we saw the team keep their awareness on the target," said Drinkard. "They did a good job of staying in the moment and keeping it simple. Tomorrow we want to take the positives from the day, stay humble and continue our process to improve."
One of the highlights of the round came from freshman Maria Toennessen who picked up her first collegiate eagle on hole No. 3. It was also the first eagle for the Rebels this fall.
Abby Newton also posted a solid opening round. The Katy, Texas native shot a 1-under par 71 with three birdies on the afternoon. Junior Taelor Rubin and Toennessen both fired a 4-over 76, while Stani Schiavone shot a 5-over 77.
Vanderbilt leads the field after day one action, with a 3-under 282. Competition continues through Sunday and fans can follow all the action at the Tar Heel Invitational at BirdieFire.
