OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss student-athletes took some time out of their busy schedules to visit three local elementary schools this week to take part in Reading with the Rebels.
Reading with the Rebels is partnered through the Ole Miss Rebel Ready program, in which student-athletes give back to the community by taking time to visit and read with children from Oxford and Lafayette elementary schools.
"I thought participating in the Reading with the Rebels program was a lot of fun. Being an Ole Miss student-athlete I am so fortunate and I am very happy to be able to give back to the community," said Caroline Rohde-Moe of the Ole Miss women's tennis team. "The kids had so many questions and were really interested in what life is like being a student at Ole Miss and being an athlete, and I hope that in some way it will inspire them in the future."
Other athletes that participated in Reading with the Rebels were Mary Ashton Nall (track and field), Rachael McLamore (volleyball), Nathan Noble (football), Will Few (football), Tanner Bailey (baseball), Tanner Mathis (baseball), Scott Ashford (baseball) and Aimee Gregory (Rebelette). They visited with students from the upper and lower elementary schools at Lafayette and the Scott Center for special needs students.
The mission of the Rebel Ready Program is to challenge student-athletes to be lifelong learners while pursuing continuous improvement academically, socially, personally and professionally during and beyond their careers as student-athletes.
Through Rebel Ready, Ole Miss student-athletes stay actively involved in both the Oxford and University communities. In addition to Reading with the Rebels, student-athletes regularly participate in activities such as visiting patients in area hospitals, being mentors to elementary school students, visiting senior adults at local retirement centers, holding several "Meet the Rebels" days throughout the year and giving numerous talks on subjects such as drug awareness and staying in school to area students.
