CHAPEL HILL, N.C.
- The Ole Miss golf team opened action at the UNC Tar Heel Invitational hosted by North Carolina on Friday. The Rebels are sitting in 18th place after a round of 310 at Finley Golf Course. Junior Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) is leading the Ole Miss contingent with a 1-under par, 71.

South Carolina is leading the field at 1-under par after an opening round of 287. Wake Forest and Duke are tied for second with rounds of 288 while NC State (289) and Oregon (291) round out the field. There is a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard at 4-under par 68.

Hovatter is sitting tied for 11th after her round of 71. The Alabama native had success at the Tar Heel Invitational last season posting career best scores for 54-holes and her best career round. Today, Hovatter was quite consistent posting two birdies to just one bogey while going par the rest of the way.

"The bright spot of our day had to be Alison Hovatter," said Ole Miss head coach Michele Drinkard. "Nobody prepares as hard as she does on the process to be successful. Today part of her success came from playing with a goal of hitting greens. She hit 13 greens making two birdies with only one bogey, which was a successful outing for her."

Drinkard also commented on Hovatter's strength in dealing with adversity.

"Before we left, Alison spoke at Fellowship of Christian Athletes about how she has gone through some tough times wanting it too much, dealing with a serious injury and how she dealt with adversity and her own expectations. I learn everyday so much from Alison and we as a team need to find a way to deal with our own adversities be in on the court or off the court. Tomorrow is a new day and we accept the challenge."

North Carolina native, Taelor Rubin (Raleigh, N.C.) fired a 78, while Maria Toennessen (Grimstad, Norway) carded a 79. Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) shot an 82, while Madisen Bentley (University Place, Wash.) shot an 84 to round out the Ole Miss contingent.

The Rebels continue action at the Tar Heel Invitational tomorrow and will be paired with Alabama and Michigan State out of the Big Ten. Follow live action here.
