Rebels Play Missouri To 3-3 Draw
10/24/2014 | Soccer
Box Score OXFORD, Miss. - The Rebels got three solid goals on the night to build a two-goal lead on the Tigers but were unable to find the fourth following a Tiger rally as Ole Miss (7-5-5, 2-3-4 SEC) played Missouri (10-4-3, 5-3-1 SEC) to a 3-3 draw on Friday night at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
The Rebels moved in front by two goals and held a 2-0 lead at the half as Olivia Harrison and Jessica Hiskey both found the back of the net, but the Tigers found a rally twice on the way to the draw with three goals in the second half.
"It's disappointing to get the draw after playing so hard and having a 2-0 lead, but that's a good Missouri team with a really good offense," said Ole Miss head coach Matthew Mott. "They punished us with a great free kick from Kaysie Clark, one of the best players in the country, after we did a good job on her all night. You have to give her credit for that. I'm proud of the way we played and how we fought like crazy to get three good goals. We just have to refocus and get ready for Vanderbilt on Sunday."
The Rebels got on the board first when Harrison collected a deflected ball in the box and popped it over the head of the Missouri keeper and into the net in the eighth minute to give Ole Miss the 1-0 lead. The deflected shot from far side of the box was deflected off the Missouri keeper and the foot of another player to Harrison by the near corner of the six-yard box where she flicked it over the keeper and into the goal.
Ole Miss got its second goal in the 29th minute from Hiskey when the junior took a free kick from Addie Forbus and headed it past the keeper to give the Rebels the 2-0 lead. Forbus took the free kick from the top, far corner of the 18-yard box and sent the serve in where Hiskey headed it into the net to put the home team up 2-0 - a lead that would hold at the half.
Missouri answered in the 56th minute, coming out firing in the second half as Kaitlyn Clark lined up a shot from the far side of the box that was deflected by the Rebel keeper to the foot of Jessica Johnson. Johnson then drilled her first goal of the season to get the Tigers on the board.
Ole Miss answered in the 60th minute to push the lead back out to two goals when Gretchen Harknett collected loose ball at the top of the box and fired a shot through the chaotic mass of bodies and into the goal to put the Rebels back on top 3-1.
The Tigers once again found answers, notching a goal in the 62nd minute - this one again from Johnson - as the forward headed an Alli Magaletta corner kick into the net to pull Missouri back within striking distance of the Rebels.
Missouri punched the tying goal into the net in the 84th minute following a hand ball called against the Rebels right outside the top far corner of the box. Kaysie Clark lined up the shot from 22 yards out and drilled the free kick into the net past the near corner to knot the score at 3-3.
Ole Miss got another chance to grab the win in regulation when the Rebel offense got loose in the waning minutes of play. Forbus brought the ball down the middle of the field on a breakaway and fired a shot from roughly 25 yards out that struck the crossbar and was cleared by the Tigers with a little more than a minute to play, sending the match into overtime.
The two teams played to a draw through the two overtime periods to each pick up a point in the overall Southeastern Conference standings with each team taking two shots in the first overtime period and the Rebels taking the only shot of the second overtime.
Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday, traveling for the final time this regular season to face the Vanderbilt Commodores at 5 p.m.
