STATESBORO, Ga. – Sophomore Forrest Gamble fired a 3-under par 69 to lead the Ole Miss men’s golf team on the first day of the Chris Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern University Friday.

The Birmingham, Ala., native, who posted four birdies in the opening round, is tied for third place among individuals.  Junior Blake Morris carded an even-par 72 in the opening round and finishes the day tied for 17th place.

As a team, the Rebels are tied for third place, posting a score of 2-over 290 in the opening round. No. 14 UAB is in the lead after day one with a score of 3-under 285.

“The story of the day for us was the great play of sophomore Forrest Gamble,” head coach Ernest Ross said. “He only made one bogey on a very tough course with a lot of challenging pins. Blake Morris continues his good play with a 72, and senior Tom Brown made a great comeback after being 5-over with a great 3-under on his back nine.”

Brown, who is competing in his first team tournament of the season, fired a 2-over 74 in the opening round. Freshman Ben Wolcott tied for 48th place, posting a score of 3-over 75.  Junior Joe Lewis finished the opening round with a score of 9-over 81.

The second round of the Chris Schenkel Invitational will tee off tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
