Football Wins Big At Rebels' Choice Awards

OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss football team took home several awards as Ole Miss athletics rolled out the red carpet and celebrated another successful year at the fourth annual Rebels' Choice Awards Monday night. The event kicks off a busy Grove Bowl week of events, highlighted by the Regions Bank Grove Bowl on Saturday.
The semi-formal event took place in the Gertrude C. Ford Center for Performing Arts and honored athletics achievements from the past year. The event, hosted by ESPN's Clay Matvick, began with a red carpet for student-athletes and athletic department staff before the awards program began.
In all, 19 different honors were handed out on the evening to Ole Miss student-athletes. Of the awards, the Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee selected 16, while three were selected via fan voting.
Football took home seven awards, including head coach Hugh Freeze, who was named men's coach of the year after leading Ole Miss to an 8-5 record and a Music City Bowl victory. Football also captured men's rookie of the year (Laquon Treadwell), men's student-athlete of the year (Andrew Ritter) and men's Hotty Toddy award (Deterrian Shackelford).
New this year, the Bennie Award was given to a walk-on student-athlete in memory of former Ole Miss football walk-on Bennie Abram, who passed away. Jordan Holder took home the men's award, while Rachael McLamore took home the women's award.
In the fan voting, Jeff Scott's game-wining touchdown run in the season opener at Vanderbilt was voted play of the year, while football's last-second win over LSU was voted game of the year. In the other fan vote, Marshall Henderson was named fan favorite.
Soccer took home three awards, including team of the year, after setting a school record with 16 wins and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Rafaelle Souza repeated as women's most valuable Rebel, while head coach Matthew Mott was named women's coach of the year.
Sam Kendricks and the track and field team were named men's most valuable Rebel and men's team of the year, respectively.
