GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Ole Miss men's tennis Junior Nik Scholtz won his match in straight sets, but the Rebels dropped a close doubles point and No. 15 Florida picked up singles wins at three, five and six to secure the 4-1 win here Sunday at the Linder Tennis Stadium.
Scholtz, ranked No. 16 in the nation, rebounded from a disappointing loss on Friday, to defeat 78th-ranked Gordon Watson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles He improve to 5-1 in the SEC and 10-1 overall at No. 1 singles.
That tied the match, after Florida had come away with 8-6 wins on the top two courts in doubles for the opening point.
Unfortunately, that was all the Rebels could muster. William Kallberg was up 3-2 in the third set against UF's Florent Diep, but it would not finish, as the Gators came away with straight set wins on six and three to go ahead 3-1. The matter ended, when Vinod Gowda lost in three sets to Elliot Orkin 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
