CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Ole Miss women's golf team is sitting in 15th place with a 10-over par, 298 after the opening round of the Powerade Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston at historic Yemans Hall.

Wake Forest is leading the field with a 6-under par, 282. Arkansas is (283), NC State (287), UCF (288) and Virginia (288) round out the top five. Wake Forest's Sierra Sims is leading the individual field after firing a tournament low round of 7-under par 65.

"I love the way this team battles and fights for everything out there on the course," said head coach Michele Drinkard. "Tomorrow we need to continue to stay focused on the process of each shot and have the mindset that it can be our best shot yet."

The Rebels, who are seeing some of their SEC counterparts for the first time this season, are just 10 strokes out of the top 5 and just four strokes out of 10th place.

The dynamic duo of Stani Schiavone (Bangor, Pa.) and Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) continue to lead the Ole Miss squad. The pair both fired a 1-over 73 in the opening round.

Schiavone was 1-under after the front nine with two birdies and closed with a 2-over on the back nine to close the day with a 73. Newton also played well on the front nine and was even through the first nine holes. The Texas native recorded three birdies in the round and closed with a birdie on No. 18.

Alison Hovatter (Merdianville, Ala.) posted a 3-over par 75 and was also even on the front nine. The junior posted two birdies on the round on No. 1 and No. 16. Madisen Bentley (University Place, Wash.) was in the lineup for the first time and fired a 5-over par 77, while Sofia Idoyaga (Buenos Aires, Argentina) shot an 83.

The Rebels continue action at the Cougar Classic tomorrow with a 9 a.m. (ET) shotgun start at Yemans Hall. Follow the action HERE
