Rebels Fall At UCF
9/21/2014 | Soccer
Sept. 21, 2014 ORLANDO, Fla. - Ole Miss (6-2-2) fell behind early and was never able to regroup as the Rebels fell to UCF (7-1-2) by a score of 4-0 Sunday night in the final non-conference contest of the regular season for the Rebels.
UCF outshot the Rebels 12-to-6 on the night as Ole Miss was unable to capitalize on limited opportunities against a stingy Knights defense.
"It was a tough one down here where we didn't get off to a great start," said Ole Miss head coach Matthew Mott. "UCF scored a couple of good goals and put us behind. We have to learn from it and be better. We have a short week with another tough team coming to town Thursday night. We have to get ready to go and jump back out on the field to compete."
UCF got on the board on a counter after the Rebels had pressed the attack and kept the ball on the Knights' side of the field for several minutes. UCF took the ball away on an attack down the near sideline and connected through the middle to find Tatiana Coleman. Coleman then sent the ball ahead behind the Rebel defense where Ashley Spivey attacked the goal and put it in the net in the 14th minute.
The Knights added to the lead in the 18th minute when Coleman brought the ball down the near side and sent a cross into the box from the baseline to the foot of Amanda Wilkin. The UCF midfielder put it in the net to give the home team the 2-0 lead.
The lead grew to 3-0 for the Knights in the 31st minute when Jennifer Martin converted a penalty kick. UCF got the penalty when the Knights sent the ball forward into the box for Martin who went down when the Rebels' Kelly McCormick dove for the stop and took the legs out of Martin for the foul.
Ole Miss fired four shots in the half, but never found the frame as the Knights held a 9-to-4 advantage in shots and put three in the net for the halftime lead.
The Rebels got the best chance in the early stages of the second half when Olivia Harrison brought the ball down the far side and played it into the center of the box through a pair of UCF defenders. The Knights turned away the attack, clearing the ball before Bethany Bunker could get to the ball and keeping the Rebels off the board.
The Knights got a fourth goal in the 77th minute when UCF sent the ball ahead down the near side and behind the Rebel defense. Hannah Debose sent it into the box where Madison Cannon gathered it, turned and fired it in past the far post for the goal.
The Rebels return to action on Thursday night, hosting the Arkansas Razorbacks in a Southeastern Conference match that will be televised nationally by the SEC Network at 6 p.m. Admission to all matches at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium is free.
