MEET THE PRESS: Matt Mott Monday Press Conference
9/8/2014 | Soccer
Ole Miss head coach Matthew Mott met with members of the media on Monday to discuss his team's performance last weekend against Minnesota and Memphis and preview the upcoming weekend with matches at Austin Peay and at home against Middle Tennessee.
"We had our inaugural Rebel Classic tournament this weekend, where we hosted Minnesota and Memphis. Auburn was also here playing both of those teams.
It was a very good weekend for us. First and foremost, Oxford really showed those three teams a lot of hospitality. I give a lot of props to all of our support staff. Titus Queen, especially, was there all weekend with us. We really did a great job of hosting a very high-level soccer tournament.
We played Minnesota on Friday night in, really, a great college soccer match. They were up 2-0 in the second half. We battled back to get two goals in the last 11 minutes to tie it. We then scored the game-winner in the second overtime. Olivia Harrison had all three goals for us. She's starting to round into form, which is important to us since she's been injured for most of the season.
We turned around and played Memphis last night, which is a darby in soccer. It's typically your biggest rival closest to you in proximity. It's kind of a soccer term and that's Memphis for us. It's always a tough match with them. It was another good game; another high-level game. Last night we took the lead 1-0 in the first half off of a goal from Jessica Hiskey. We gave up one in the second half and battled them to a 1-1 draw.
I'm very happy with my team's effort and their intensity level. We had a bunch of players play 217 minutes on the weekend, which is a really heavy weekend, especially in non-conference. I'm very pleased with them. We played very well in the back all weekend. Kelly McCormick was excellent. Samantha Sanders, Maddie Friedmann, Courtney Carroll all had a good weekend for us.
I'm really happy with the play up front. Addie Forbus is just getting better and better. We're excited about where our team is. As you start going through the season, you want momentum.
This weekend gave us some good momentum going into this week in front of us, really our last non-conference week before we start conference play for real. We go to Austin Peay on Friday night, and then we're back here Sunday night for Middle Tennessee State. The following week we start down in Starkville against Mississippi State."
