OXFORD, Miss. - It was a terrific Tuesday for the Ole Miss men's tennis team, who rose to No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Rankings and came away with two convincing wins against Jackson State to improve to 7-2 on the season.
The Rebels returned to the top 10 for the first time since ending the 2013 season at No. 10. They will host Tulane Friday at 4 p.m. followed by No. 16 Vanderbilt Sunday at 1 p.m.
Ole Miss switched up its doubles pairings against Jackson State and despite a slow start, won the point. William Kallberg and Ricardo Jorge won 6-2 at No. 3, and Nik Scholtz and Grey Hamilton won 6-3 at No. 2.
Kallberg defeated Styllanon Gkontsaris 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles; Scholtz downed Carlos Martinez 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for his 15th consecutive home win, and Zvonimir Babic defeated Miguel Martin 6-0, 6-4 to clinch the first match.
Vinod Gowda and Ricardo Jorge added wins at five and six, respectively to close that match 6-1.
The second match began with just two and three doubles, and the Rebels won both. Babic teamed up with Hamilton for a 6-1 win at No. 2, and Gowda and Jorge teamed up for a 6-3 win at No. 3.
Lindmark, freshman Gustav Hansson and Hamilton, all won their matches at one, two and three singles by the same score of 6-0, 6-1 to give the Rebels a 4-0 triumph in the second match.
"We accomplished some good things out there today and some saw some things we can build on," head coach Toby Hansson said. "We got off to a little bit of a slow start in the doubles during the first match, but we played really well in singles. It was great that everybody got to play. In the second match, doubles was a big improvement with more energy from the guys. That's the way we need to play every time. Overall we were very impressed with the team and how they handled themselves today, they were focused and very professional."
Fans coming to Friday's match will enjoy free pizza between doubles and singles and receive a poster of Ricardo Jorge.
