CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Ole Miss Women's Golf team competed in round two action today at the Hurricane Invitational, and were anchored by a pair of juniors looking to bounce back from slow opening round starts.

Abby Newton (Katy, Texas) continued her back nine success today with three birdies, and the Texas native finished had a strong 1-under par 35 going into the turn. Her day ended with a team-best 3-over par 74, which was an improvement from her opening round 78.

Head Coach Michele Drinkard was glad to see Newton's success, and looks forward to more of it from the rest of the team.

"It was good to see Abby back on track," Drinkard said. "She played beautifully today, ripping drives of 250+ off the tee and hitting seven of her 12 greens inside 25 feet."

Newton is also looking forward to getting back on the course and continuing to improve in tomorrow's final round.

"Today I was more relaxed out there, and from that I was able to produce more shots and score better," Newton said. "I'm looking forward to more of the same during tomorrow's final round."

Junior Madisen Bentley (University Place, Wash.) had a birdie of her own and took a two-over par 38 into the turn. Her day ended with a seven-over par 78, which was also an improvement from the opening round.

Drinkard looks for the improvements to continue, and knows it's within her team to grow and learn from their mistakes.

"Golf is not a perfect game, and our heart and effort are there," Drinkard said. "We just need to eliminate the little mistakes, and if we do those things better the scoring will follow."

It's been a tough start to the spring season for the Rebels, but senior Stani Schiavone (Bangor, Pa.) is confident the team can play better and will be successful.

"Tomorrow we just need to play our best and leave it all on the course," Schiavone said. "If we can do that, and have a little fun, we will have achieved our goal."
