OXFORD, Miss. - In the midst of a four-match homestand, the No. 17 Ole Miss women's tennis team posted its second consecutive sweep, dominating Missouri 7-0 here Sunday at the Gillom Sports Center.
With the win, the Rebels improved to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in the SEC. Missouri fell to 8-7 overall and 0-4 in conference.
The Rebels have won all three meetings with the Tigers and only dropped one match in all three. In fact, they only dropped one set Sunday.
Ole Miss picked up a pair of 8-3 wins on courts two and three to capture the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead. Straight set wins at No. 2 and 3 singles from freshman Arianne Hartono and junior Mai El Kamash and then the clincher from senior Julia Jones finished off the Tigers.
"In this league it's hard to win 7-0 against anybody, and we did that twice against two good teams," head coach Mark Beyers said. "It's not like Arkansas and Missouri aren't any good. They are very good. I thought we played pretty well. It's always good to sweep the SEC weekend, because there are no easy matches in this league."
Hartono downed Mizzou's Cassidy Spearman 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to make it 2-0 and then junior Mai El Kamash finished off Brianna Lashway 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to give Ole Miss a 3-0 lead.
In an up and down match, Jones, ranked No. 14 in the nation, defeated Kelli Hine 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 to clinch the victory and her 21st of the year and 94th of her career. She needs just six more to reach the 100-club.
"I started off playing really well, and I don't think she was playing her best tennis," Jones said. "In the second set she came out firing the first two games and I wasn't really prepared for it. I was able to regroup and come back in the third set, play my game and close her out."
Freshman Natalie Suk, senior Erin Stephens and sophomore Zalina Khairudinova all won in straight sets to complete the sweep.
The Rebels conclude the homestand next weekend hosting No. 9 Alabama Friday at 5 p.m. followed by No. 39 Auburn Sunday at 1 p.m.
"It was definitely important for us to come back after a two tough losses on the road and not only win them, but win them decisively," Jones said. We dominated and that will give us momentum coming into this next weekend. We are excited to play Alabama at home. We know that we can play with any team in the country, and we showed that this weekend."
"Great to be back at 2-2 in the SEC with two more top teams coming in this next weekend," Beyers said. "With spring break the girls don't have class, so it gives us an opportunity to focus on just tennis and not have to worry about classes for a little bit. Hopefully we can continue to get better and play some good tennis next weekend."
