ATHENS, Ga. -- The No. 14 ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team lost a very close doubles point and could not mount a rally in singles, falling to No. 8 Georgia 4-0 here Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex to conclude the road trip 1-1.
On Thursday, the Rebels (16-7, 8-4) lost the doubles point as well, but they were able to secure four singles for the 4-2 victory at South Carolina. The Rebels will earn the No. 4 seed in the tournament regardless, as they own the tiebreaker against Vanderbilt and Florida.
Georgia won at No. 3 doubles 6-3 and then Gustav Hansson and Stefan Lindmark downed the Bulldog duo of Wayne Montgomery and Paul Oosterbaan 6-2 at No. 2. All eyes then turned to court one, where Nik Scholtz and Zvonimir Babic were locked in a tight battle with the No. 1 team in the nation, Austin Smith and Ben Wagland. It would go to a tiebreaker, with Georgia winning it 8-6 to clinch the point.
The Bulldogs didn't look back taking straight set wins on courts five and six and then the clincher at No. 1. Vinod Gowda lost to Nick Wood 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and then Oosterban defeated freshman Grey Hamilton 6-2, 6-4 on court six.
With the Bulldogs up 3-0 No. 34 Smith closed out No. 16 Scholtz 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 to clinch the win for Georgia. Scholtz finished 6-3 in the SEC.
When played was stopped, Lindmark was up a set and on serve in the second trying to win his ninth SEC match. Since he didn't finish, he ends the season undefeated in the SEC (8-0), becoming the fifth player in school history and the first since 2009 to go undefeated.
The SEC Championship draw will be released following the conclusion of regular season play Sunday.
