OXFORD, Miss.-- The Ole Miss women's golf team began play at the 2015 Rebel Intercollegiate on Friday, carding an opening round 298 at the Ole Miss Golf Course.
Furman has the lead in the tournament with a even par 288 in a field that features four teams in the top 20, while the Rebels sit tied for 10th after the first 18 holes.
"I like the momentum the team has right now," said head coach Michele Drinkard. "As a team we are scoring better and making better decisions. I like where we're headed, and tomorrow we have to continue to keep the mindset of one shot at a time."
"We could have hit a few more greens, but on a windy day like we had today, I'm pleased with where we are," Drinkard added. "I talked to the team about expectations, and not to compare the second round to today's because tomorrow will be totally the total opposite of today."
Leading the way for the team was junior Alison Hovatter (Meridianville, Ala.) who fired a 1-over par 73 anchored by 15 holes of par or better.
"Alison is steady, and makes a lot of pars which help her build momentum," Drinkard said. "She's able to build that momentum, but if you ask her she'll tell you she didn't like the way she finished. It's good to be in that mindset."
"At the end of the round if you shoot more pars than everyone else, and snag a few birdies you're going to play really well," Drinkard added.
"It was really awesome today, being back on our home course in front of our families and friends. It was special," Hovatter said. "I was very relaxed, and didn't have any expectations, so I was able to embrace the windy conditions and contribute to my team."
Sophomore Maria Toennessen (Grimstad, Norway) played as an individual, but carded the best score of the day for a Rebel with her 2-under par 70.
"Maria has been striking the ball really well, and today she had five birdies," Drinkard said. "The difference between today and the Samford Intercollegiate was her putter, and she's on track to continue shooting some really good numbers."
Toennessen is one of just 12 players under par in the field, and sits tied for second place going into day two. Â
"I had a lot of fun, and just played," Toennessen said. "I hit a lot of greens and it was easy to take advantage of those opportunities. For tomorrow, I have to have the mindset that I'm starting over. I can't look back to today. I just have to be in the moment and play the next shot."
Round two of the 2015 Rebel Intercollegiate will tee off at 8:51 a.m. Saturday from the Ole Miss Golf Course.
