Five Goals Propel Ole Miss Past Austin Peay
8/30/2015 | Soccer
OXFORD, Miss. â€" The Rebels got a hot start Sunday afternoon against Austin Peay, scoring in the first two minutes on a goal by CeCe Kizer, and never looked back as Ole Miss (3-0-1) won 5-0 over the Lady Govs (1-2-0).
Ole Miss dominated the offensive side of the ball scoring five times during the match. The five goals were the most goals scored for the Rebels since playing ULL in 2014, which resulted in a 5-1 win. The complete performance can also be noted on the defensive side of the ball as the Rebels notched their third shutout in four games. The Rebels outshot Austin Peay 24-4, with an even 12 shots in each half. Kizer and Forbus both tallied goals, putting each of the student-athletes with at least one goal in each of the last three games. Kizer scored twice for her first multi-goal game of her career, while Jessica Hiskey and Bella Fiorenzo both found the goal for the first time this season.
The Rebels attacked the goal early and often, capitalizing on several opportunities. Ole Miss notched three goals in the first half alone, beginning with the Kizer goal that scored late in the second minute. Kizer sent the ball into the net following a rebound from a Jennifer Miller shot.
"We came out really sharp and fast. To get that goal in the first couple minutes was really good for us," said head coach Matthew Mott. "We just kept rolling from there."
The Rebels marked 12 shots in the first half alone and Forbus was the next to convert her scoring opportunity. Danielle Gray made her first of two assists in the opening 45 minutes, sending the cross to Forbus who then put the ball into the right side of the net in the 18th minute. With fifteen minutes remaining in the first half, Gray sent in a free kick that connected with the head of Hiskey, who placed the ball perfectly into the back of the net. The goal was the first of the season for Hiskey.
"I thought we had a complete performance in all phases. We moved the ball around really well and we finished off a couple of chances. Austin Peay is a good team but we got the opportunities and we were able to finish them," noted Mott.
The Rebels wasted no time after stepping back on the pitch for the second half when Harknett took a great shot in the 54th minute but the save was made on a diving play by the Austin Peay goalkeeper Lindsey Todd. Kizer tallied her second goal of the match just three minutes later on an assist by Harknett. This goal was the fourth of the season for the freshman who scored three goals in two games this weekend. Miller took the ball down the field, passing the ball to Fiorenzo. Fiorenzo beat the keeper on the shot to mark the fifth and final goal of the match.
"Our team is going to get back to work and look to have a great week at practice. UCF is a very good team and very well coached, we will have to be ready on Friday," said Mott.
Ole Miss continues its seven-game homestand on Friday when the Rebels face off against UCF at 7 p.m. The Rebels will then take on Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. Fans can tune into the action on SEC Network+.
