Rebels Rule NCAA Stats, SEC History
1/19/2016 | Football, Blog
Last week, I wrote this story about the 64 school records and numerous program firsts that Hugh Freeze's Ole Miss football team accomplished in 2015.
Today let's take a closer look at where the Rebels' season stacked up in the national statistical rankings and the all-time Southeastern Conference record books.
Ole Miss had one of the nation's most dynamic offensive attacks in 2015, ranking top 10 in scoring (40.8 ppg), total offense (517.8 ypg) and passing (334.7 ypg).
The Rebels produced the fourth-most passing yards (4,351) and fifth-most total yards (6,731) in a season in SEC history. That goes back to 1933!
QB Chad Kelly ranked top 10 nationally in six statistical categories, most notably total offense (349.4 ypg), points responsible for (246), passing yards (4,042) and passing touchdowns (31). Kelly's 4,042 passing yards are third-most in a season in SEC history, while his 4,542 total yards are also third-most. He passed Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, Dak Prescott, Eli Manning, and others on his way to those lofty totals. Only Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel has ever had more total yards in a season than Kelly, among SEC players.
Kelly's favorite target, Laquon Treadwell, also had a fantastic season in the stat books. Treadwell tied for 12th nationally with his 11 touchdown catches and ranked 21st in receiving yards per game (88.7) and receptions (6.3). He was the SEC leader in touchdown catches and receiving yards.
Remarkably, Treadwell finished his three-year career with the all-time Ole Miss record in catches for a game, season and career. He ranks top 15 in SEC history for catches in a game and top 10 for catches in a season and career.
