10/15/2016 | Men's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala. - After a successful day at the Yarbrough Tennis Center Saturday, the Ole Miss men's tennis team boasts three of the final eight in singles and half the final four in doubles at the ITA Southern Regional Championships.
Two duos reach semis in doubles
The day began with doubles, and all three of Ole Miss' teams advanced to the quarterfinals. Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton took out the No. 5-8 seed, Strahinja Rakic and Nuno Borges of Mississippi State 8-7. Tim Sandkaulen and Gustav Hansson defeated Julian Saborio and Gabor Csonka of LSU 8-4. The top seed, Filip Kraljevic and Zvonimir Babic downed Alabama's Ritchie Kruunenberg and Hayes Brewer 8-1.
In the quarterfinals, Kraljevic and Babic were edged out by Mississippi State's Trevor Foshey and Niclas Braun 8-6. Fallert and Hamilton beat Jorman Reyes and Daniel Merker 8-4 to reach the semifinals, where they will face their teammates, Hansson and Sandkaulen, who topped the Southern Miss duo of Wenpo Tseng and Chaoyu Huang 8-7.
Three into the singles quarters
After two rounds of doubles, Hamilton, Fallert, Hansson, Sandkaulen and Kraljevic headed back out on the court for their third round singles matches. Hansson, Sandkaulen and Kraljevic all won to reach the round of 16 and faced their fourth match of the day. No problem for all three. Sandkaulen was the first to book his spot in the quarters, defeating LSU's Samerzic 6-4, 7-5. Kraljevic picked up the biggest win of his young career, taking out No. 26 ranked Mate Cutura 7-6(6), 6-4 to join his teammate in the final eight. Moments later, Hansson, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, finished off Auburn's Connor Huertas 6-3, 7-5 to book his spot in the quarterfinals.
Quoting head coach Toby Hansson
"The whole team has done a very good job competing and having the right attitude no matter what has been thrown at them. This has been the key to why we have seen a lot of success so far in this tournament. Right now we need to recover physically from a brutally long day of matches and get ready for another tough day.
"If we can stay composed and compete like we have been we have a good chance to have another good day here in Auburn tomorrow."
Sunday schedule
Hansson and Sandkaulen will face each other in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. Kraljevic will meet Constantin Schmitz of Tulane. At least one Rebel will be in the semifinals at 2 p.m., with doubles semifinals to follow.
