Harris Wins Individual Title at Palmetto Intercollegiate
10/25/2016 | Women's Golf
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Junior Katy Harris didn't know what was on the line when she sunk a 10-foot par put on the 18th hole at Turtle Point Golf Course, but when her teammates sprinted to her at the cup and showered her with water, it became clear.
"It was a roller coaster today," Harris said. "I just tried to go out there and take it one shot at a time and not get ahead of myself. I had no clue where I stood coming down the stretch. When I made the putt and heard my teammates explode, I knew I did something right-and when they ran on the green and poured water bottles on me I knew I won."
The St. Simons Island, Georgia native put together a spectacular 3-under par (69) Round 3 to become the first medalist for Ole Miss women's golf since Stani Schiavone won the Samford Intercollegiate in March 2015.
Harris is the first Rebel to medal under second-year head coach Kory Henkes, and she did so in tough conditions, with the wind howling off the Atlantic Ocean onto the Kiawah Island, South Carolina course throughout the third round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate.
"Katy was impressive all week long," Henkes said. "To be able to shoot a 69 in today's windy conditions really shows her level of talent. She is so deserving of this win, and the whole team is extremely excited for her."
Harris entered the day tied for second place and collected five birdies during the final round, including four on the front nine. A bogey by Coastal Carolina junior Malene Krolboll Hansen on the 17th hole opened the door, giving Harris a one-stroke lead going into the final hole.
"She played with Malene from Coastal Carolina, and they were back and forth all day long," Henkes said. "It came down to Katy making a clutch 10-foot putt on the final hole to clinch the title. They both put on a display of great golf today."
While Harris navigated the windy conditions masterfully, they presented a major challenge for several of the Rebels, and the majority of the 20-team field. Ole Miss ended the first day atop the leaderboard and was second after day two, but fell to fourth on the team leaderboard after the third round.
Freshman Pi-Lillebi Hermansson worked through the wind well, shooting 2-over (74) to notch her second top-20 finish in four collegiate tournaments. Sophomore Martina Flori had a difficult final day, but strong performances in the first and second rounds set her up for her second top-20 finish as a Rebel.
"The wind played a huge role in today's round," Henkes said. "We made some costly mistakes down the stretch with poor club selections and a few mental errors. We all need to stay hungry to get better during this offseason."
Ole Miss will take the winter to sharpen its game before returning to action Feb. 20 for the Central District Tournament in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
