Rebels Fall at No. 2 South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Ole Miss soccer put up a good fight falling to No. 2 South Carolina, 2-0, Thursday night in front of a vibrant crowd of 3,819 at Stone Stadium.
The Gamecocks (17-0-1, 11-0 SEC) came out firing with pressure within the first five minutes, before Savannah McCaskill scored in the 17th and Sophie Groff found the net just a minute later for the only goals of the contest.
The Rebels (9-10-0, 4-7 SEC) came back to control the second half nearly evening up the shot totals, finishing with 10 shots in the match while limiting the Gamecock attack to just one shot in the final 45 minutes.
Senior Addie Forbus posted Ole Miss' first shot at the 25-minute mark, which was blocked on the near side, before drifting one wide right with a minute left before half. She went on to take another in the 57th when she got space in the box before her attempt was saved.
She posted three shot attempts on the night, while freshman Gabby Little had two. Goalkeeper Marnie Merritt was busy in the opening half with five saves, while Madi Killeen entered to finish out the second half of play in goal.
Freshman Alley Houghton had the Rebels' best look of the night in the 81st when she fired one in from the far post, it hit the near post and rolled along the goal line staying just out.
Ole Miss opens SEC Tournament play Monday, Oct. 31, with a first round matchup, opponent and time to be determined.
