Men's Golf Signs Three In-State Standouts

OXFORD, Miss. - Three Mississippi standout golfers have signed a national letter of intent to join the Ole Miss men's golf team for the 2017-18 academic year head coach Chris Malloy announced Wednesday. The Rebels have secured commitments from Matt Liddon, Charlie Miller and Cecil Wegener.
"With the way that recruiting is in our sport, we are recruiting two and three years ahead of when they actually get to school. This recruiting class was my first priority when coach Kyle Ellis and I were hired two and a half years ago. We knew that we had to make a big splash and send a message that we could recruit the elite players in the country and we believe that we have accomplished that with this class. I can't thank Coach Ellis enough for his efforts in making this happen."
Malloy inked two Jackson Prep products in Miller and Wegener. The duo combined to lead Jackson Prep to Class AAAA State Championships in 2014 and 2016, where Miller finished second in those years while Wegener won the individual championship in 2016.
"Charlie has had as good of a junior career as anyone that we have recruited here at Ole Miss," said Malloy. "I look for him to come in and contribute right away. His record speaks for itself and I know that this is a dream come true for him as he has always been an Ole Miss fan."
Miller is the first in the history of Mississippi junior golf to become a three-time champion of the Mississippi Boys Amateur. He was selected to the 2016 Best of MSPreps All-State Boys First Team and qualified for the 2014 and 2015 U.S. Junior Amateur. The Jackson, Mississippi native was one of twelve candidates selected as a 2016 AJGA Transamerica Scholastic Junior All-American. Miller is part of the National Honor Society, Cum Laude Society and Chi Alpha Mu.
Wegener was also a first-team selection for the Best of MSPreps All-State Boys golf team. He also qualified for the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur and finished tied for second in the 2016 Mississippi Boys Amateur.
"Cecil has flown under the radar for most of his junior career," said Malloy. "He is a fierce competitor on the course and I think he is going to surprise some people once he gets on campus."
Liddon, a Yazoo City, MS native attends Manchester Academy and was named to the All-State Boys Amateur second team in 2016. He is a multi-sport athlete at Manchester Academy, lettering in golf and basketball.
"Matt was the first player to commit once I got the job here," said Malloy. "He really bought into the vision we had and it has been a great fit. His best golf is ahead of him and I know that he will make a tremendous impact on this program right away."
"Our goal is to find the best players in the world that we feel can help our program be successful," said Malloy. "We are very fortunate that we didn't have to leave the state of Mississippi to find those players in this class. It's always a little bit sweeter when you win with guys from here in your state."
