Wolcott, Gamble Lead Rebels On Day One At Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. - Junior Ben Wolcott carded a 2-under 142 and senior Forrest Gamble posted a 1-under 143 to lead the Ole Miss men's golf team on the first day of the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate Monday.
Wolcott fired five birdies through 36 holes and sits in a tie for 6th place with six other golfers after the first two rounds at the Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course. He carded a 3-under 69 in the morning first round followed by a 1-over 73 in the second round.
Gamble climbed 17 spots after the first round to finish the day in a tie for 12th. The Vestavia Hills, Alabama native got off to a slow start, but posted scores of par or better on his final 25 holes. Gamble birdied the 412-yard par-4 No. 7 twice and carded four birdies in the opening two rounds.
The Rebels head into the final day of the three round, two-day event hosted by South Alabama in 6th place, after posting a two-round total of 578. Ole Miss got off to a hot start on the day, carding 14 birdies in the opening two rounds. Auburn sits atop the team leaderboard with a two-round total of 560.
"I am very pleased with the way we came out of the gates and competed early in both of our rounds," said Ole Miss head coach Chris Malloy. "Overall, it wasn't a bad day for our first competitive round of the season. We just need to clean some areas of our game up and help sustain the momentum that we built.
"Ben and Forrest really kept us in contention today. I know that the rest of the guys will help lead us tomorrow."
Junior Noah West finished the day in a tie for 26th place after he fired a 1-over 73 in both rounds, carding five birdies through 36 holes. Freshman Braden Thornberry sits tied for 32nd with a two-round score of 147, while fellow freshman Beau Briggs posted three birdies in the first round, and is in a tie for 52nd place with a two-round total of 150.
