Rebels Heat Up In Second Round In Mexico

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico - Freshman Braden Thornberry fired a 2-under par 69 and junior Ben Wolcott carded a 1-udner par 70 as, Ole Miss charged up the leaderboard on day two at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate Monday.
Buoyed by three rounds under par, Ole Miss post the third-best round of the day, turning in a team score of 282 at the 6,928-yard Querencia Golf Club. The Rebels shot up the leaderboard two spots to eighth place, ahead of five ranked opponents including No. 18 LSU and No. 28 Arkansas.
"Certainly a great day for our team," said Rebel head coach Chris Malloy. "We got off to one of the best start of the season and didn't quite finish the way that we would have liked. However, all of our guys are playing great golf and are capable of leading the way tomorrow."
Thornberry jumped 22 spots on the individual leaderboard Monday to head into the final round in a tie for 15th. The Southaven, Mississippi native fired six birdies on the day, including back-to-back birdies at No. 17 and 18 to finish with a round of 2-under 69.
"Braden is a very special player," said Malloy. "He got a couple of bad breaks that cost him a very low round today, but overall he is peaking at the right time."
Right behind Thornberry was Wolcott, who also made a big jump on the leaderboards, climbing 17 spots to head into the final round tied for 20th after a 1-under 70. Wolcott is looking for his third-consecutive top-25 finish this season.
Senior Connor Davis fired birdies on his first two holes and captured another on his final hole to complete a season-low round of 1-under 70. The Olive Branch, Mississippi native finished with six birdies on the day, and heads into the final round tied for 51st. Senior Forrest Gamble remains in the top-25 headed into the final round after turning in an even-72 with three birdies on day two. Junior Noah West carded a 4-over 75 and sits tied for 67th heading into the third and final round.
