OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team is set to compete in the first national championship tournament of the 2016-17 season, as the nation's top players gather in Tulsa, Oklahoma beginning this weekend for the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships.
Pre-qualifying matches begin Saturday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center with qualifying matches starting on Oct. 3, and main draw getting underway on Oct. 6. The singles and doubles finals are scheduled for Oct. 10.
Who's going
Ole Miss will be well-represented throughout the weekend and into next week. Senior Ricardo Jorge, junior Grey Hamilton and sophomores Fabian Fallert and Robert Mounger will begin competing in the pre-qualifying tournament Saturday. Players must win four matches to advance to the qualifying tournament. Junior Zvonimir Babic, sophomore Filip Kraljevic and freshman Tim Sandkaulen will start their quest in the qualifying singles on Oct. 3. Junior All-American Gustav Hansson, ranked No. 18 in the nation, begins his fall next week in qualifying doubles with Sandkaulen and then later in main draw singles. Babic and Kraljevic, ranked No. 6 in the nation, are in the main draw doubles.
Rebels at the All-American
The Rebels have claimed singles and doubles titles at the All-American. In 2004, three-time All-American Catalin Gard won the singles title and in 2008, Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge took home the doubles crown.
What's at stake?
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. x-x, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Quoting Head Coach Toby Hansson
"The All-American is the first major event of the year. We are looking forward to competing against the nation's best players, and hopefully we can have a few more players join Gus in the main draw."
