Harknett's Late Goal Lifts Rebels Over Troy

OXFORD, Miss. - Gretchen Harknett found the net for the only goal of the night with just three minutes left on the clock, pushing Ole Miss soccer past Troy, 1-0, Sunday night at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
The Rebels (4-2) and Trojans (4-3) stayed knotted up all night as Ole Miss was active offensively with 20 shots pressuring Troy, while the visiting side finished with seven.
Goalkeeper Marnie Merritt and the Rebel defense were stout throughout the contest, giving Merritt her third shutout of the season as she made four stops in the win.
Offensively, Harknett was aggressive throughout, taking six shots, four of which came on target. Her shot of the night came at the 86:58 mark when Addie Forbus controlled a ball inside the box, headed one to Harknett, who then punched it in to the center of the net from the far corner.
It marked Harknett's second goal of the season and 12th of her career, giving the Rebels their fourth win heading into SEC play next weekend.
The Rebels again finished at their average with 20 shots in the contest, posting seven on target. Outside of Harknett's four, Sara Coleman, CeCe Kizer and Gabby Little also put one shot each on goal.
Troy goalkeeper Mikki Lewis had a solid night in goal, finishing with six saves, coming up with arguably the best in the 60th minute when Harknett fired a shot in from the far post, as Lewis dove and deflected it with her feet.
The Trojans committed 13 fouls on the night resulting in two yellow cards, while the Rebels committed just seven fouls. In corner kicks, Ole Miss also edged Troy, 8-5.
Ole Miss opens its 2016 SEC slate Friday, Sept. 9, against Missouri at home at 7 p.m. The Rebels will then host South Alabama Sunday, Sept. 11, for a 6 p.m. contest in Oxford.
