10/19/2017 | Women's Tennis
OXFORD, Miss. -- A chance to play at the famed Indian Wells in the Oracle/ITA Fall Championships is at stake when the Ole Miss women's tennis team serves it up in the ITA Southern Regional Championships this weekend in Auburn, Alabama.
Play begins Friday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center and concludes Monday with the singles and doubles finals.
Who will be there
Sixteen teams from Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi make up the field, including SEC foes Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, and LSU.
What's at stake?
The winner of the singles and doubles titles will earn a berth in the Oracle/ITA Fall National Championships to be held Nov. 1-5 in Indian Wells, California.
Players to Watch
Senior All-American Arianne Hartono, ranked No. 17 in the nation, is the No. 1 seed in the tournament followed by senior Natalie Suk, ranked, No. 32, as the No. 2 seed. Hartono and sophomore Alexa Bortles are the No. 1 seed in the doubles.
Freshman Sabina Machalova went 4-1 in her first collegiate tournament, the All-American Championships, including a win against the No. 40 ranked player in the nation. She will also team up with Suk in doubles. The pair went 1-1 at the All-American. Tea Jandric, Anna Vrbenska Allie Sanford, Cameron Kriscunas and Brooke Stevens round out the Rebels competing this weekend.
Success at Southern Regionals
The ITA Southern Regionals has been a successful event for the Rebels the last few years. All-American and current volunteer coach Julia Jones took home the title in 2014, defeating four nationally-ranked players along the way. Last year, Natalie Suk and Anna Vrbenska reached the doubles final, and Arianne Hartono made the semifinals of singles.
Talking with head coach Mark Beyers...
"We are looking forward to seeing our players compete in the ITA Regionals in Auburn this weekend. The girls worked extremely hard since coming back from the All American and I am confident that hard work is going to pay off this week."
