TULSA, Okla. â€" Senior Gustav Hansson of the Ole Miss men's tennis team advanced to the second round of singles at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships Thursday with a straight set win at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Hansson solid in opening round…
Hansson, ranked No. 14 and seeded 9-16, took out 39th-ranked Matic Spec of Minnesota 6-3, 6-2. The senior All-American broke to start the match and that was all Hansson needed in the first set. In the second set, Hansson broke to go up 3-1 and then broke again to win it 6-2.
Hansson will face 44th-ranked Spencer Furman of Duke in the second round Friday at 10 a.m. Furman defeated qualifier Tim Ruehl of Arizona State 6-4, 7-5 to reach the second round.
This will be the first meeting between Hansson and Furman.
Hamilton/Fallert drop doubles…
Senior Grey Hamilton and junior Fabian Fallert were not as fortunate in their first-round match. The 11th-ranked duo lost to the Texas tandem of Yuya Ito and Harrison Scott in two close sets 6-4, 6-4. Hamilton and Fallert trailed 5-2 in the second set and then came back to get within a point of tying it up, but the Longhorn duo won the deciding point to clinch the win.
Hamilton and Fallert will play Michael Genender and Sameer Kumar of Stanford in the consolation draw Friday at 1 p. m.
Quoting assistant coach Devin Britton…
On Hansson's match
"Gus looked very sharp out there. He has worked hard in the weeks leading up to this tournament and it really showed today. The field here in Tulsa is about as strong as it gets so it will be a great test for him going forward."
On Hamilton and Fallert
"Grey and Fabi didn't play their best doubles today. They fought hard in the end and gave themselves a shot to get the break back in the second set and just couldn't quite convert. They have another great opportunity against a tough Stanford team tomorrow in the consolation draw. I'm excited to see how well they bounce back."
