OXFORD, Miss. -- The No. 13 Ole Miss rifle team hosted No. 14 Jacksonville State for the NCAA Qualifier and their last home match of the 2017 season this past Saturday at the Patricia C. Lamar Readiness Center. The Rebels fell to the Gamecocks in a close contest, 4648-4645, but finished on top in air rifle (2354-2333).

Recapping the Match

The Rebels topped the Gamecocks in air rifle, but fell in smallbore, as JSU defeated Ole Miss by just three points. Despite the close loss, the Rebels used Saturday to post individual bests that would count towards a possible NCAA Championship individual bid.

Saturday also marked the final home match for senior Alison Weisz. Weisz was the leading force behind the Rebels 2354 air score, as she posted a 592, the highest of the contest. Last season, Weisz shot a 591 at the NCAA Qualifier which earned her an invitation to the NCAA Championships. Junior Jessica Haig and sophomore Harley Gardner both tallied 589 scores, the second highest of the match. While sophomore Kristyn Trump did not contribute to the team's air total, she was able to tie her personal best with a 587.

As the Rebels fell to the Gamecocks in smallbore (2315-2291), the contest was led by JSU's David Sink who posted a 582. Following Sink was Ole Miss' Randi Loudin with a 581, a new personal best, four points above her previous. While Loudin did not contribute to the Rebels total smallbore score, it did factor into her new career best aggregate of 1152. This new best surpassed her previous 1148 aggregate. Gardner (579) and freshman Alana Kelly (572) contributed to the team's overall score.

"Once again we had solid performances, but we were not able to put together the team score we needed. Going into this contest I expected it to be a close match and it was. Again, we found ourselves struggling in smallbore, but we stood strong in air," Beasley said. "I was happy to see Randi (Loudin) turn in a 581 smallbore score a result of a perfect 200 in prone."

The Rebels will travel to Akron, Ohio where they will compete in the Great American Rifle Conference Championships Feb. 24-26. This upcoming contest will not factor into the NCAA Championship selection, which will be announced on Wednesday, February 22 at 5 p.m.
