Rebels Finish 10th at Central District Invitational

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Ole Miss women's golf team finished 10th in the Central District Invitational at St. Lucie Trail Golf Club.
The Rebels wrapped up three difficult rounds to open the 2017 spring season, shooting 308-312-312-932 to break a six-tournament string with a team score less than 900, dating back to last year's Rebel Intercollegiate.
"It was a really challenging course-extremely tight, with some tee shots that had to be extremely well thought-out. We all prepared for it as hard as we possibly could, we just struggled with our mental games more than anything else," said sophomore Kie Purdom. "I think we all learned a lot from this week and have a lot to work on in preparation for Long Beach."
Purdom paced the Rebels on the day at 3-over par (75), her second best round of the season. She was steady throughout Round 3 with 12 pars and two birdies.
Senior Maria Toennessen was second among the Rebels today at 5-over (77), as the Rebels completed their first tournament without an eagle this season.
Scores were high across the board at PGA National. The tournament winner, No. 7 Furman, shot 5-over on the final day and finished at even par. The second-place finisher, Memphis, finished 23-over par.
Ole Miss won't have long to dwell on the loss. The Rebels have just one day off and two days of practice before they hit the road once again for The Gold Rush in Seal Beach, California, Feb. 27-28.
"We only have a few days at home to practice and get ready for our next tournament, so it's important that we spend those few days wisely, evaluate how we played and practice on what we need to improve," Toennessen said. "I think for most of us, it was the mental side of the game that maybe took us a little by surprise, so we need to be tougher mentally for next week and step up our game so we can compete on the top of the leaderboard."
