3M Augusta Invitational

Rebels in Eighth After 18 Holes in Augusta
3/17/2017 | Women's Golf
AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Ole Miss women's golf team sits eighth after 18 holes of the 3M Augusta Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club.
The Rebels posted a team score of 301 for Round 1. Ole Miss kept mistakes at a minimum for the opening 18 but totaled just six birdies between five golfers. Head coach Kory Henkes hopes Ole Miss can improve upon that number in Round 2.
"We struggled a bit today with our putting," Henkes said. "It is crucial to be on the correct part of the greens out here, or it can quickly turn into an undesirable score. The team is still high-spirited and eager to get back out there and make some birdies tomorrow."
Harris Leads Tight Rebel Grouping
Ole Miss was in the final group to tee off for the opening round and spent some time high on the leaderboard in the early going as all five Rebels finished within three strokes of one another.
Junior Katy Harris led the way, the only Rebel with multiple birdies. The St. Simons Island, Georgia native stacked up 10 straight pars and a birdie to open the tournament. She sat at even par going into the 18th hole, but a double-bogey to close the day left the Palmetto Intercollegiate champion walking to the putting green for some extra work after a 2-over par (74) Round 1.
"I just had a hard time today navigating the greens, but with some good practice I put in after my round on the putting green, I think I'm good to go for tomorrow," Harris said.
Senior Madisen Bentley had a strong start to the day, playing to 1-under par through six holes. Both Bentley and sophomore Martina Flori finished one stroke behind Harris at 3-over (75).
Sophomore Kie Purdom and freshman Pi-Lillebi Hermansson each birdied on the front nine and finished 5-over (77) to place all five Rebels in the top 50 through 18.
Ole Miss will once again be in the final group to tee off from the first hole shortly after 10 a.m. CT Saturday. The matchup to watch in Round 2 is undoubtedly the grouping of Harris, East Tennessee State's Ankita Kedlaya (+2) and Coastal Carolina's Malene Krolboll Hansen (-1). Harris and Hansen went head-to-head for the Palmetto Intercollegiate title, with Harris taking the crown in the final tournament of the fall.
