GREENVILLE, S.C. --  The Ole Miss women's golf team had an encouraging start to its first round at the Lady Paladin Invitational, but a rough patch just before the turn disrupted the Rebels' day.

A birdie on the first hole by freshman Julia Johnson had Ole Miss out to a tie for first place with the seventh-ranked host Furman. But trouble struck across the board on the seventh, eighth and ninth holes and the Rebels sit 15th after a 311 in Round 1.

"Holes 7-9 killed us today," said head coach Kory Henkes. "They aren't necessarily difficult holes unless you miss the ball in the wrong place, and unfortunately that is what we did today.  Mistakes were followed by mistakes, and the team lost focus of the game plan we set during the practice round when they started firing at pins that they shouldn't have."

Johnson and junior Kie Purdom led Ole Miss in Round 1 at 3-over par (75). Purdom was least affected by the pre-turn blues. She birdied the sixth and eighth holes before bogeying the ninth to wrap up the front nine at a team-best even par.

Johnson, meanwhile, put together the team's best back-nine performance at even par. She used a birdie on the 13th hole to offset a bogey on the 16th.

The Rebels will get another perspective on the course in Round 2, as they'll tee off from the 10th hole starting at 8:45 a.m. CT. Ole Miss will again walk the course with its SEC rival, LSU. The Tigers (+21) fared just two strokes better than the Rebels to open the tournament.

"The team is disappointed but also encouraged about the opportunity to go low tomorrow," Henkes said. "There is a lot of golf left and we are going to fight until the end."
