Sophomore Defender Helped Lead Rebel Soccer to Pair of Shutout Victories

OXFORD, Miss. – Serving as an anchor on a Rebel defense that registered back-to-back shutouts over Kentucky and No. 25 Mississippi State, Ole Miss defender Grace Johnson has been named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office.

Johnson was a key force on the back line for Ole Miss, which was the only team in the SEC to record a pair of clean sheets during the week.

For Ole Miss, it was the first streak of back-to-back shutouts since the opening two matches of the season and the first time with consecutive clean sheets in SEC play since a three-match run in 2014.

The Centerville, Utah native was paramount in the Rebel defense shutting down Kentucky on the road. Johnson led the team in various categories, including challenges won, air challenges won and successful tackles without committing a foul.

The center back followed up with a tremendous defensive performance in the 2-0 victory over No. 25 Mississippi State on Sunday, holding two of the SEC's top-10 scorers in Zakirah McGillivary and MaKayla Waldner to a single shot on goal. The Rebels retained the Magnolia Cup for a fifth-straight season, the longest streak by either side in the series' history.
