Rebels Shoot 12-under 276 in Round One, Three Shots Back in Second

KAUAI, Hawaii – The No. 37th-ranked Ole Miss men's golf team completed the first round of the Princeville Warrior Makai Invitational Sunday afternoon. A little rain delay in the morning didn't faze the Rebels, as it was raining birdies all day long on the island of Kaua's North Shore.

Ole Miss sits in second after a first round 12-under 276, the eighth-best team score in program history. The Rebels are second in the tournament with 24 birdies and are just three strokes back of first place Pepperdine, who is ranked sixth in the country.

"As a team, we stumbled a bit coming in, but that will not be what we focus on as we move forward," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Two more solid rounds, and we will certainly have a chance to win this thing."

Josh Seiple is alone in the lead after a 7-under 65, pacing the 112-player field. The senior dominated the back nine, with five birdies and an eagle on the par 4 14th. Starting on No. 9, he opened with a par before going 6-under over his next six holes thanks to four birdies and an eagle. With another birdie at No. 18, the Castle Rock, Colorado native posted an impressive 29 on the back side before grinding out pars over his final eight holes of the day. The 65 ties Seiple's career low, which he set last year in the second round of the SEC Championship.

"The putter was hot in my first 10 holes," said Seiple. "I'm ready to put together another good round tomorrow to put our team in place to win on the final day."

Beau Briggs joined Seiple in the top-5 individually, one shot back in second place right behind his fellow classmate. The senior brought his momentum from Nashville to Hawaii as he fired a first round 6-under 66 with a tournament-leading eight birdies. With two of those birdies coming on par 3s, Briggs leads the tournament in par-3 scoring. He started his round on fire with five birdies through the first six holes. Closing out his day on the front, Briggs recorded a bogey-free final nine and added three birdies coming in to cap off a career-low round.

"Josh and Beau really stepped up and had big rounds when we needed it," said Malloy. "That's what we lean on seniors to do."

Braden Thornberry, the 2016 champion of the tournament, shot a first round even-par 72. The No. 2 amateur in the world had four birdies to counter four bogeys to lead to level par on his opening 18.

Redshirt-freshman Charlie Miller added a 73 (+1) to contribute to the team score. He birdied his first hole of the day (No. 9) before rattling off three birdies over a four-hole stretch on the back nine. A triple bogey on his 17th hole of the day, the 213-yard par-3 seventh, prevented an under-par round. However, the Jackson, Mississippi, native still began the tournament with a round below his season scoring average.

The second round begins tomorrow morning with an 1:00 p.m. CT shotgun start. Ole Miss will be paired with Pepperdine, UAB and Purdue.
