Rainy Hawaiian Afternoon Wreaks Havoc on Rebels

Thornberry’s Second Straight 72 Paces Ole Miss Golf

KAUAI, Hawaii – A rainy afternoon in Hawaii stopped the No. 37th-ranked Ole Miss men's golf team's climb up the leaderboard on day two of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational. The Rebels got off to a fast start before falling to the middle of the pack with the weather toughening the course.

Heading into the final round, the Rebels find themselves in ninth place (276-295—571) at 5-under. No. 6 Pepperdine (273-284—557) sits at the top of the leaderboard at 19-under, four shots ahead of second place Missouri (286-275—561).

With a second consecutive even-par round of 72, senior Braden Thornberry paced Ole Miss in round two. After making four birdies and four bogeys during the first round, he recorded three birdies and three bogeys today to remain at level par. The No. 2 amateur in the world began his day with a birdie on the par-5 second, and following a bogey at No. 4, he rattled off eight straight pars. His third in final birdie, coming at the 18th, brought him back to even.

Beau Briggs and Cecil Wegener fired rounds of 73 (+1) to follow Thornberry. Entering the day one shot off the lead after a career-low 66 (-6) in round one, Briggs birdied three of his first eight holes. Another birdie at No. 12 pushed the senior to 9-under before a rough three-hole stretch dropped him back to 5-under, where he currently sits in a tie for eighth. Wegener tallied four birdies throughout his round, including three over the first five holes of the back nine.

After an opening round 65 (-7), senior Josh Seiple slept on the lead. He recorded pars on every hole on the front nine yesterday, and nearly did the same today. Seiple made eight pars, but a snowman on the par-4 fourth caused him to fall back. He added a pair of birdies on the back and is tied for 23rd heading into the final round.

Charlie Miller also posted an up-and-down round. The redshirt freshman made a team-high five birdies in round two, while also making an eagle on the par-5 fifth. A few big numbers prevented Miller from going low.

"We really struggled as the conditions worsened on our back nine today. We made some very uncharacteristic mistakes that really cost us," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We need to learn from those mistakes and close this tournament with a good round tomorrow."

Ole Miss will wrap up the fall season tomorrow with the final round Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational from Hawaii. The shotgun start begins at 1 p.m. CT. For updates throughout the final 18, follow the Rebels on Twitter at @OleMissMGolf.
