Rebel Golf One Shot Back After Opening Round
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A 6-under 30 on the back nine propelled senior Beau Briggs into a share of the individual lead on day one of the Intercollegiate at The Grove. As a team, Ole Miss Men's Golf sits in second place after an opening round 284 (-4), one shot back of Kennesaw State.
With his 67 (-5) and competing as an individual, Briggs is tied atop the leaderboard alongside Kyle Flexsenhar of South Florida. Four Rebels sit in the top 10 after round one on a day that saw the defending champion of the event struggle. Two-time medalist Braden Thornberry fired a 76 (+4). However, a rare off day by the world's No. 1 amateur didn't affect the squad. Sophomore Cecil Wegener led the lineup with a 69 (-3), while redshirt-freshman Charlie Miller added a 70 (-2). Freshman Jackson Suber balanced three birdies with three bogeys for an even par 72. Fresh off a top-five finish at Erin Hills, senior Josh Seiple carded a 73 (+1).
"It was a good start today," said head coach Chris Malloy. "I was really happy to see our guys step up on the one day that Braden struggled. That's what makes championship teams, and I was certainly happy to see that today."
Briggs stole the day with his opening round 67, including seven birdies on the back nine. Sitting at even through 12, his putter caught fire for five straight birdies before a par at 18 completed his red-hot round. The senior, making his season debut, leads the tournament with eight birdies after round one.
Another Rebel debut for the books, Sarut Vongchaisit opened with a 3-under 69. The freshman, competing as an individual, is second in the 78-man field with seven birdies. Vongchaisit finished strong by recording birdies on the last four holes of the day to land two shots back of Briggs.
Wegener, not a stranger to fast starts this season, made six birdies of his own during an opening round 69. The sophomore was 2-under on the par 5's and birdied three of the final four holes coming into the clubhouse. Miller and Suber started quickly as well, both going 2-under through their first five holes.
Briggs tees off at 9:52 a.m. CT, the first Rebel on the course for round two. The Ole Miss lineup goes off No. 1 beginning at 10 a.m. with Miller. The other two individuals, Vongchaisit and Jack Gnam, are in the 10:40 a.m. pairing.
