Rebels Drop Hard Fought Game at Butler
11/16/2018 | Men's Basketball
Terence Davis with a season-high 30 points in loss
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Ole Miss Men's Basketball dropped a tough one Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse as the Butler Bulldogs outlasted the Rebels, 83-76. It was a back-and-forth contest from the get go.
Terence Davis had a season-high 30 points on 10 of 16 shooting, three points shy of his career high. The senior had 21 of his points in the first half and matched his career high with six threes made in a game. Breein Tyree added 17 points of his own.
Butler's Paul Jorgensen stole the night for the hometown team, going off for a career-high 27 points. Kamar Baldwin added 23, including a perfect 12 of 12 from the charity stripe.
Entering the game as two of the best shooting teams in the country, the matchup lived up to that expectation early. Butler nailed five of its first six shots, while the Rebels started out 4 of 6 from the field. After the Bulldogs got off to a 5-0 lead, head coach Kermit Davis elected to switch to the 1-3-1 zone. The move paid off as Ole Miss forced a pair of turnovers to spark an 8-2 run. Tyree nailed two three-pointers, his second coming from the wing to give the Rebels their first lead of the game, 8-7.
Jorgensen took over for Butler, scoring the home team's next 12 points. With the game tied at 13-13, back-to-back treys pushed the Bulldogs ahead and forced Kermit Davis to call timeout with 12:26 remaining in the first half.
Coming out of the timeout, Ole Miss held Butler scoreless for nearly four minutes. Terence Davis went on a run of his own. After five straight points by the senior guard, the Bulldogs broke the scoring drought with a bucket down low. However, Davis countered with a 4-point play, drilling a three from the top of the key and converting his free throw following the foul. The sequence put Ole Miss ahead 24-22.
Trailing by eight, Terence Davis continued his tear to end the first half. Another three to go along with a smooth drive to the hoop made it a one possession game, but a Butler baseline jumper just before the buzzer gave the home team a 41-36 lead at halftime. The opening half was a scoring battle between Jorgensen and Terence Davis as each player led their respective teams with 21 first half points.
The second half began as a back-and-forth battle as Butler held onto its lead. Ole Miss was dealt a blow to its frontcourt as forward Bruce Stevens fouled out with 14:48 left in the contest. However, the Rebels never wavered and continued to fight on both ends of the floor. Trailing 57-53, the active Ole Miss defense sent Butler into another dry spell lasting four minutes. Tyree tallied four straight points to tie the game before Terence Davis hit his sixth three of the night. The corner triple gave the Rebels a 60-57 lead and forced Butler to call timeout with 8:22 to go.
Despite Ole Miss holding Butler without a field goal for almost eight minutes, the Bulldogs were able to stay in the game thanks to the free throw line. With the Rebels up five, Butler went on a 9-0 run to take the lead back for good. Going 18 of 18 at the line for the second half, the Bulldogs held on for the seven-point victory.
Following the first road game of the season, Ole Miss returns to the friendly confines of The Pavilion. In a campus game as part of the Emerald Coast Classic, the Rebels host Nicholls (Nov. 20) on SEC Network (6 p.m. CT).
