Postgame Quotes vs. Fayetteville State

11/2/2018 | Men's Basketball

Ole Miss 101, Fayetteville State 52

OLE MISS HEAD COACH KERMIT DAVIS

Opening statement…

"I was proud of the way our team started the game and hopefully that ball movement stood out. 29 assists on 41 baskets made was good. If you're playing against a team like Fayetteville State all the statistics were probably right, their field goal percentage defensively 28 percent, we shot over 60 percent, rebounding margin +28. The way the ball was moved, a couple times it stuck but I think we're starting to be a more unselfish team. I thought Terence Davis having four assists and no turnovers is a really good stat for him. You guys saw what KJ Buffen can do, his skill level is really high. I'm proud of our team. It was great to get everybody minutes. They've been working so hard, and it was a good way to start."

On Dominik (Olejniczak) and Bruce's (Stevens) efficiency…

"Bruce is so skilled. What I love about him is he's going to make a lot of threes this year. We'll utilize him in other ways, but both of those guys cut hard. We ran some set plays for them, they cut, and I thought the ball got to the second side where you get it right to them. We delivered them the ball in good places where they can score. Those guys played like that in our scrimmage, I'm proud of both of them. We'll maybe get it to where they both play on the floor at the same time. Our deal is that, and they're both skilled enough, but our deal is with Bruce can he really guard a live four, one of those 6'6 quick guys? Bruce is getting himself in good shape, and I think as it starts going in the next couple weeks, both of those guys will start to get on the floor at the same time."

On team defense…

"To start the game, I thought it was good, but then we got in a period of time where they just missed. For the most part, I thought we tried to make them make tough twos and that was all we were trying to do. For a game like that, where the score gets the way it just held technique together, and a long way to go there. But I thought there were a lot of positives defensively."

On KJ Buffen's play…

"He's a point 3-4, he really is. His skill level is high but when his body really starts developing, you can imagine KJ Buffen in a year or so when he is 230 pounds with that kind of skill set. He's got great basketball instincts and IQ for a guy that's 18. He'll play the whole year at 18 years old. He really should be a 2019 (high school graduate). He's really got a huge ceiling."
