NICEVILLE, Fla. – In a rematch of the 2014 Emerald Coast Classic championship game, Cincinnati exacted revenge on the Ole Miss men's basketball team in this year's title game. The winners of the inaugural tournament, the Rebels (3-2) fell to the Bearcats (5-1) 71-57 Saturday evening.
Devontae Shuler scored a career-high 24 points in the loss, going 9 of 14 from the floor and pulling down a team-high six rebounds. Fellow guard Breein Tyree added 14 points, including 12 in the second half, to complete an impressive weekend at the beach. Both Shuler and Tyree were named to the Emerald Coast Classic All-Tournament Team.
Free throws and fouls played a primary factor throughout the game as both teams got to the line often. Ole Miss converted 16 of 17 (94.1 percent) from the stripe, while Cincinnati made 25 of 35. UC's Jarron Cumberland, who scored a game-high 25 points and was the tournament's most outstanding performer, went 13 of 14 at the line.
Ole Miss entered the game as the SEC's best three-point shooting team, but the Bearcats' stifling 2-3 zone held the Rebels to just 3 of 21 from long range.
Blake Hinson drilled a three to begin the game, but Cincinnati countered with a 7-0 run to force head coach Kermit Davis to call timeout four minutes into the championship contest. Coming out of the break, Shuler slashed to the hoop and used his shiftiness to finish at the rim. The sophomore stepped up with the Rebels' next eight points.
Cincinnati built a double-digit lead before Ole Miss battled back. The Rebels held the Bearcats without a field goal for the final 4:39 of the first half, using an 11-2 run to take some momentum into the locker room. To close out the half, KJ Buffen pulled down a big rebound and found Terence Davis on an outlet. Davis found a streaking Shuler on the wing, and the South Carolina native stepped into a three just before the buzzer sounded. Behind 18 first half points from Shuler, Ole Miss sliced the deficit to four, 37-33.
Despite a combined two points in first half between Tyree and Terence Davis, the team's two top scorers, the Rebels found themselves in the game. Cincinnati was able to get to the line in the first half, converting 16 of 21 free throws. Cumberland matched Shuler with 18 points in the opening stanza, while making all 10 of his attempts at the charity stripe.
The Rebels knotted the game at 39-39 early in the second half. Thanks to the 1-3-1 zone, Shuler came up with a steal before throwing the hammer down to bring the Ole Miss fans to their feet. The thunderous dunk secured Shuler a new career high in points.
Cincinnati broke the game open with a 15-2 run, pushing it out of the Rebels' reach by continuing to get to the free throw line. Tyree tallied half of the team's second half points to reach double figures, but the Bearcats outscored Ole Miss 26-16 over the final 15 minutes to win the tournament title.
After a weekend at the beach, the Rebels return home for a pair of games in The Pavilion. First, Ole Miss hosts San Diego for a midweek matchup (Nov. 28) set for 6:30 p.m. Kicking off the month of December, the Rebels welcome ULM to Oxford for a Saturday afternoon tilt with a 1 p.m. tipoff. Both games will air on SEC Network+ and can be heard on the airwaves of the Ole Miss IMG Sports Network.
