Women’s Tennis Drops Close Matches in Arizona

Rebels will compete in consolation bracket at Fall Nationals
SURPRISE, Ariz. – Ole Miss Women's Tennis saw four athletes compete at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, but each ended in tough defeats at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex on Wednesday.
Senior Tea Jandric began the day dropping the first set to Nina Khnelnitckaia of Kansas, 6-3, but battled back with a 6-7(2) victory. Jandric fell in the decisive third, 6-3.
Teammate Sabina Machalova fell to West Florida's Berta Bonardi in close sets, 7-5 and 6-3.
In doubles play, junior Alexa Bortles and freshman Isolde de Jong battled and were bounced in heartbreaking fashion to Christina Rosca and Summer Dvorak of Vanderbilt. The league rivals claimed set one, 6-4. Bortles and de Jong battled back with a 6-7(4) win in the second. The Commodores' duo won an exciting final frame, prevailing 13-11 in the tiebreaker to advance.
Jandric has already advanced in the consolation bracket by virtue of a withdraw by Stanford's Melissa Lord. Lord is ranked 13th in the country by the latest ITA Rankings. Times will be revealed for Jandric's Round of 16 consolation match Thursday.
Machalova is paired with Maria Toran Ribes of Kansas in Thursday's Round of 32 consolation at 4:30 p.m. CT. Bortles and de Jong challenge the fourth-ranked duo in the country in Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez (Syracuse) at 8:30 p.m. in doubles play.
