Johnson Leads Rebels on Day 1 of SEC Championships
4/18/2018 | Women's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman Julia Johnson landed in the top 25 to lead the Ole Miss women’s golf team in the first round of the SEC Championship on Wednesday at Greystone Golf & Country Club.
It was a tough day overall for the Rebels, who recorded a 316 and sit in 14th place. Despite the difficult first round, the Rebels remain optimistic for the next 36 holes on Greystone’s Legacy Course.
“Sometimes golf is hard and today was one of those kinds of days for us,” said head coach Kory Henkes. “The course was challenging with a lot of wind and firm greens. Some of our mistakes came from course management and others were just poor ball striking. We had a great practice session after the round and everyone is still in good spirits to fight back over the next two rounds.”
Johnson fared the best among the Rebel golfers in Round 1. The freshman out of St. Gabriel, Louisiana, had one birdie and amassed 13 pars to close out at 4-over (76) and in a tie for 25th.
Junior Kie Purdom parred her first eight holes and finished at 7-over to land in the top 50 for Ole Miss. Freshman Conner Beth Ball led the Rebels with three birdies on the day and closed out at 8-over. Senior Katy Harris birdied twice on
Ole Miss will be paired with LSU and No. 35 Texas A&M for the second round. They’ll tee off starting at 9:10 a.m. from the 10th hole.
