Gustav Hansson Takes Singles Title in Finland
Stay up to date at OleMissSports.comwith former players who are currently playing professional tennis around the world. In this week's update Gustav Hansson captures the singles title in Finland, and Grey Hamilton reaches the quarterfinals in Illinois.
Hansson Captures Second Career Singles Title…
Rebel All-American Gustav Hansson won his first professional title since graduating from Ole Miss, as he captured the singles in St. Karin's Finland last week. Hansson, the No. 3 seed, beat Finland's Patrik Niklas-Salminen, ranked No. 578 in the world, 7-6(6), 6-0 for his second career ITF title.
"I won a close first set, which was the key to victory. This was a perfect start after my college career and gives me a good feeling for the upcoming tournaments," Hansson said.
Two of Hansson's five matches in the tournament, went three sets, including in the first round against fellow Swede, Linus Frost, in which he won 6-4 in the third. In last Friday's semifinal against No. 1 seed Laurent Rochette (France), Hansson fought back to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Hansson is seeded No. 4 in the Futures in Hyvinkaa, Finland this week. He won his first round Monday morning, defeating Justin Roberts (Bahamas) 6-2, 7-5.
Hamilton Making Waves in Illinois…
Grey Hamilton completed his career in 2018, but will be back at Ole Miss this fall to complete his degree. This summer he's been making the most of his opportunities on the Futures circuit.
Back in June Hamilton qualified for the main draw in Pittsburgh and reached the quarterfinals.
Last week, Hamilton qualified for the Futures in Decatur, Illinois, and advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual winner Nicolas Alvarez (Duke).
After a solid week in Decatur, Hamilton received a Wildcard into this week's main draw in Edwardsville, Illinois. He'll begin play either Tuesday or Wednesday.
